How to Choose Backup Power for Data Centers

A practical framework for selecting backup power in data centers — from UPS ride-through to long-duration hydrogen.

1. Start with the availability tier

Define the required availability (Tier I–IV). Higher tiers demand redundant and seamless backup. Tier III+ facilities typically need UPS ride-through plus an N+1 generator fleet.

2. Size the ride-through layer

UPS (battery) must cover the gap between grid failure and generator start — usually 10–30 minutes. Choose lithium-ion for footprint and life, VRLA where budget dominates.

3. Choose the long-duration source

For hours to days of backup, options are diesel generators, hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen engines or hybrid systems. Diesel is cheapest today; hydrogen cuts emissions to zero at the point of use.

4. Plan the fuel strategy

Diesel requires tanks, testing and fuel rotation. Hydrogen requires supply agreements, storage and safety codes (NFPA 2). Green hydrogen via tube trailer or on-site electrolysis is increasingly viable.

5. Consider hybrid architectures

Battery + hydrogen fuel cell hybrids combine millisecond response with hours of zero-emission runtime — the emerging best practice for net-zero data centers.
